HAWAII REMAINS TOP LOVER’S PARADISE FOR SINGLES & MARRIEDS!

 BOOK REVIEW:

ROMANTIC HAWAII—Sun, Sand, Surf & Sex! (Then & Now!), by Boyé Lafayette De Mente. Phoenix Books/Publishers. Trade paperback, 6×9, 132 pages, 4-color cover. $12.95. ISBN: 0-914778-60-9. Distributors to the trade: Ingram Book Company, Baker & Taylor. Consumer distribution: Amazon.com, Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc.

When the first white men showed up in Hawaii in 1778 it was the middle of a long fall and winter festival during which various sexual techniques were demonstrated by nude hula dancers, couples engaged in a “bowling for partners” game, and people played various other competitive sports. The foreign explorers assumed that the Hawaiians never worked and that sex was a universal sport—so to speak.

American missionaries soon put a stop to this enlightened custom, and tried their best to completely and permanently ban hula dancing and surfing (in the nude, of course). But as time passed and the first generation of missionaries went to their reward, surfing, hula dancing and the pursuit of sensual pleasures regained some of the ground they had lost.

Today’s Hawaii is not as laid back as it was in its pre-missionary days, but the sun, the sand, the surf and the islands still work their seductive magic on residents and visitors alike.

In this delightful romp through the sensual history of Hawaii before and after the coming of Europeans and Americans, the author leaves no doubt that for vacationers going to Hawaii the experience is often like a honeymoon, whether they are married or not…

Japanologist Says Samurai-Type Training Can Help Students Succeed!

 BOOK REVIEW:

Samurai Principles & Practices that Will Help Preteens & Teens in School, Sports, Social Activities & Choosing Careers, by Boyé Lafayette De Mente. QualityTrade paperback; 6×9; 84 pages. ISBN: 0-914778-99-4. $9.95. Trade distributors: Ingram Book Company; Baker & Taylor Available to consumers from Amazon.com and bookstore chains.

Japanologist and author Boyé Lafayette De Mente says that samurai-type training should be introduced into the American educational system, and has published a “samurai training manual” to help achieve that goal.

Internationally known for his books on Japanese culture and a recognized authority on the way of the samurai, the Paradise Valley, Arizona-based author has identified the principles and practices that made up the educational and training process of samurai youths and published them in a book entitled: Samurai Principles & Practices That Will Help Preteens & Teens in School, Sports, Social Activities & Choosing Careers.

The book covers all of the basics of the samurai training—setting goals, discipline, diligence, perseverance, respect for others and self-respect, personal appearance, keeping things in order, living frugally, using intuitive and emotional intelligence, and tapping into cosmic power.

Japan’s famous samurai warriors ruled the country from 1192 until 1868. De Mente says that during the latter centuries of their reign their training went beyond martial arts to include such cultural pursuits as poetry, painting, calligraphy, history, philosophy and social behavior, making them one of the most remarkable groups of people the world has ever seen.

Schooling in the skills and knowledge necessary to produce a samurai began in early childhood, and was a lifelong effort.

De Mente says that training in karate, kendo (“the way of the sword”) and meditation are paths to learning the skills, morality and motivation that made the samurai so successful, and recommends that this training be incorporated into the educational system of Western countries.

“The present-day systems of parenting and educating in the U.S. and elsewhere obviously fail to provide the physical, intellectual and emotional framework that youths need to even approach their full potential—and that now includes Japan,” he says.

“The introduction of American culture into Japan following the end of World War II in 1945 resulted in the virtual demise of samurai-type training of the young within a single generation,” he said.

“The negative effects of this cultural shift were painfully conspicuous by the 1980s, prompting a growing number of Japanese to individually take up training in karate and kendo and the practice of meditation to reintroduce a sense of order and spiritual power into their lives.

“It was the spirit of the samurai,” De Mente continues, “that made it possible for tiny resource-poor Japan to become the world’s second largest economy in less than 30 years. Without that spirit, Japan will soon be just another kid on the block,” he added.

De Mente makes the obvious point that parents and teachers must take the lead in creating the environment necessary to build positive samurai-like qualities into the mindset and behavior of students.

The book should especially appeal to the millions of students who are into Japanese-made manga (comics), video games, super secret agent ninjas, and samurai films.

AUTHOR SAYS HUMANITY SUFFERS FROM BUILT-IN STUPIDITY!

PUBLISHER’S REVIEW

The Myth of Intelligent Life on Planet Earth! By Boyé Lafayette De Mente. Phoenix Books / Publishers. ISBN: 0914778-06-4. Trade paperback; 6×9; 130 pages. $12.95. Available to the trade from Ingram Book Company and other book wholesalers, to libraries from Baker & Taylor, and to consumers from Amazon.com.

Little Evidence

of Intelligent Life on Planet Earth!

In a new book entitled The Myth of Intelligent Life on Planet Earth! author Boyé Lafayette De Mente, internationally known for his 50-plus books on the cultures, business practices and languages of China, Japan, Korea and Mexico, takes a hard look at what he calls the irrationalities, stupidities and social insanity of human beings.

Among the things De Mente cites as evidence for the lack of intelligent life on earth: “the misunderstanding and abuse of human sexuality, the rapid reversal of male-female roles, the commercial exploitation of female sexuality, the malicious use of god-based religions, and the absurd obsession with continuous economic and population growth.”

De Mente buttresses his arguments with discourses on such topics as The Id Monster in All of Us, The Creator-God & Sanctity of Life Myth, The Ongoing Religious Quagmire, The Male-Female Sexual Incongruity, Why Men & Women Talk Past Each Other, Why the Male Prostate Gland Gets Big, and the Failure of Common Sense.

“Despite the accumulation of vast amounts of wisdom based on practical experience over the millennia, large numbers of human beings—males in particularly—persist in behaving in ways that are destructive physically, emotionally and spiritually,” he says.

De Mente attributes the perversity of the male side of humanity to the ongoing influence of the primitive id, the powerful instinct to seek gratification of all sexual desires, and the failure of cultures to help men [and women] deal with the build-up of sexual energy.

He offers specific solutions for all of what he calls “the plagues of mankind.”

WHY MEXICANS THINK AND BEHAVE THE WAY THEY DO!

Book Explains Unique Character of Mexicans With Advice on How to Deal with Them More Effectively

Jack Culebra

BOOK REVIEW:

In his book Why Mexicans Think & Behave the Way They Do!—The Cultural Factors that Created the Character & Personality of Mexicans, Boyé Lafayette De Mente, internationally known for his cultural insight books on China, Japan, Korea and Mexico, removes the masks that have traditionally obscured the realities of Mexican culture.

In doing so, he provides invaluable insights that make it possible to both understand and deal more effectively with Mexicans individually, in business, and in maintaining constructive international relations with the country—and it should therefore be of extraordinary interest and use to business people, immigration officials, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions and those planning on visiting Mexico as tourists.

The book not only points out the cultural pitfalls and misunderstandings most people encounter when dealing with Mexicans, it provides pointers on how to avoid these problems and turn the experience with Mexicans into a plus.

Mexicans have a saying: Como México, no hay dos! (There is no other place like Mexico!), and De Mente not only agrees, he recounts in vivid detail the cultural factors that created the unique character of Mexican men and women.

He writes: “Mexico’s traditional values and morals were forged in a caldron of aggressive racism, religious intolerance, male chauvinism, corruption and an elitist political system that connived with the Catholic Church to keep ordinary people ignorant and powerless and deny them the most basic human rights.

“But,” he adds, “the reality of Mexico has always been obscured behind a variety of masks—of piety, pride, courage, gaiety, indifference and stoicism.”

De Mente relates how the sexual miscegenation policy of the Spanish conquistadors who destroyed the Aztec empire, and the Spanish administrators and military forces that followed them, created a new race of mix-bloods—mestizos—whose only source of pride and dignity—for mestizo men in particular—was an extreme form of machoism and personalism that was to plague the country down to modern times.

“Personalismo or personalism was and still is the foundation of Mexican society—in business as well as in social relationships,” he says. “It still rules the lives of Mexicans to a degree that is both fascinating and frustrating, especially to Americans.”

De Mente also explains the traditional Mexican view and use of time, of truth, of respect, of face, and the simpatico syndrome. He says that the historical Catholic Church-inspired taboo against criticism of any kind—of anybody about anything—was the primary factor in the continuation of the negative facets of Mexican culture down to recent times.

He goes on to say that despite the fact that the traditional character of Mexicans is a mixture of medieval Catholicism, traditional Indian and Spanish authoritarianism, machoism and self-serving personalism, it has another face: an inherently joyful nature that manifests itself in music, singing, dancing and art.

“For Mexicans life is very personal, very intense,” he adds. “One is always on a stage; with every action, every word, subject to careful scrutiny that must measure up to cultural standards of courtesy, dignity, pride and self-respect in a virtual world based on situational ethics and morality instead of principles.

“But,” he continues, “the same character and personality attributes of Mexicans that often frustrate foreigners in their attempts to understand and deal with Mexico can also make life there deeply satisfying emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.”

Other books on Mexico by De Mente include “There’s a Word for It in Mexico!—The Complete Guide to Mexican Thought & Culture” and “Romantic Mexico—The Image & the Realities!

UNDERSTANDING AND INTERACTING WITH MEXICANS!

“A valuable resource for law-makers, law enforcement agencies, employers, religious groups and schools!”

BOOK REVIEW

WHY MEXICANS THINK & BEHAVE THE WAY THEY DO!—The Cultural Factors that Created the Character & Personality of the Mexican People!, by Boyé Lafayette De Mente. Phoenix Books / Publishers.  ISBN: 0-914778-56-0. Trade paperback, 6×9, 140 pages; $14.95. Distributors to the trade: Ingram Book Company; Baker & Taylor. Consumer distribution: Amazon.com, Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc.

Internationally known for his books on the cultures of China, Japan, Korea and Mexico, Paradise Valley, Arizona-based author Boyé Lafayette De Mente says that Mexico’s traditional values and morals were forged in a caldron of corruption, racism, male chauvinism and an elitist political system that connived with the Catholic Church to keep ordinary people ignorant and powerless and deny them the most basic human rights.

He adds that the traditional character of Mexicans was a mixture of medieval Catholicism, Indian and Spanish-Moorish authoritarianism, machoism, violence and personalism—traits that continue to impact on the character of many Mexicans still today, and if you want to understand the Mexican character—and all that this implies because of the huge number of Mexicans now in the United States illegally—you must be intimately familiar with their cultural background!

“But,” he continues, “most Americans know almost nothing about why Mexicans think and behave the way they do because the reality of Mexico has been obscured behind a variety of masks—of piety, pride, courage, gaiety, indifference and stoicism—and a romantic Hollywood image.”

De Mente notes, however, that despite the negative aspects of Mexico’s violent history, Mexicans have another face—an inherently joyful nature that manifests itself in music, singing, dancing and art.

“It is this joyful nature of Mexicans that gives the country its aura of romanticism, and for those who are sensitive to the layers of Mexico’s unique culture, makes it a wonderful experience for the casual visitor,” he says.

De Mente points out that industrially speaking Mexico is Western-European oriented, but intellectually and spiritually Mexicans are more Oriental than Western— and that this has a profound influence on their attitudes and behavior.

“If you do not have an understanding of the subtleties of Mexican values and have not had experience in dealing with them, their circumstantial ethics and morality can appear to be totally irrational,” he says.

Why Mexicans Think & Behave the Way They Do! is a valuable resource for American law enforcement agencies, employers,  hospitals, religious groups and schools.
